A Mexico supporter required rescue by crane after becoming trapped on a 13-foot perimeter fence while attempting to infiltrate a sold-out World Cup fan zone in Monterrey, Mexico.
Rescue Operation
The woman found herself stuck midway up the metal barrier while trying to slip into the gathering, which had reached maximum capacity. She was unable to move forward or retreat downward. Emergency services were summoned after multiple attempts to free her failed.
A telescopic crane was brought in to safely extract her from atop the barrier. Civil Protection and emergency crews orchestrated the rescue without further complications. The supporter was permitted to leave the area after medical assessments.
Incident Details
The incident occurred at Fundidora Park in Monterrey during the 2026 FIFA World Cup celebrations, as thousands gathered to watch the Round of 16 match between Mexico and Ecuador. Officials had encouraged supporters to view the game at alternative locations such as the Macroplaza, according to creatorzine.com.
Mexico won the match 2-0 with first-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, breaking a 40-year knockout stage drought. They will now face England in the Round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on July 5.
Fatalities During Celebrations
Separately, at least three people died during festivities in Mexico City as the national team advanced to the round of 16. The city's health secretary confirmed that a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation on June 30 at Paseo de la Reforma and Lancaster in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood, where revellers were crushed against a public toilet trailer. A third fatality, a 48-year-old woman, also died from asphyxiation.
The Health Secretariat stated: "On the streets of Hamburg and Lancaster, a report was received of two unconscious people, so the emergency response teams made up of paramedics, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, officials from the Government Secretariat and preventive police officers went to the point to provide assistance; after performing first aid and CPR techniques on the patients, they were transferred to a hospital for specialized medical care."
In a later update, the Health Secretariat confirmed the ages of the deceased and offered condolences to their families.
