Four administrative staff members at Victor Hugo High School in Marseille, including the headteacher and his deputy, were splattered with gasoline during a protest on October 1, according to police. The regional government condemned the actions as crossing an "unacceptable line."
Attack during morning protest
The incident occurred during protests at the school this morning. Police said the staff were caught when gasoline was splashed into containers, and believe the youths did not directly target them, as reported by French outlet BFMTV. The regional government stated in a press release that the school's management team had been doused with gasoline.
Damage and wider protests
The school's front door was severely damaged and reportedly on the verge of collapsing before being reinforced. Protests have been seen at schools across France, with reports of vandalism as pupils blockaded buildings. University students have also joined blockades in protest over more education resources.
The Victor Hugo incident is among the major incidents today, following yesterday when 625 people were arrested and 365 schools were affected.
