A man has been fatally shot in what police describe as a 'very targeted' attack in Melbourne's north. The incident occurred at a car park outside shops on Justin Avenue in Glenroy shortly after 4.30am on Good Friday.
The victim, who has not been formally identified, was found lying next to a red Hyundai i30 that police believe he was driving before the shooting. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas of the Victoria Police homicide squad confirmed the man was known to police and had a criminal record.
Det Insp Thomas stressed that the attack appears to be targeted, with no links to recent tobacco-related incidents or other homicides. 'There is absolutely nothing to link this to any of the tobacco incidents that have been occurring, or any other homicides or other shootings that have occurred,' he said.
Neighbours reported hearing a single gunshot around the time of the incident. Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who saw the red Hyundai i30 in the lead-up to the shooting, to come forward. Detectives are also working to determine the man's movements before his death and are unsure how many suspects they are seeking.
