A man in his 40s has sustained serious facial injuries after a suspected bladed assault in Houghton-le-Spring. Northumbria Police has confirmed a man was 'chased into a premises and assaulted with a bladed article' on Front Street, in the Chilton Moor area.
Incident details
It has been reported that the suspect got out of a vehicle at around 6.17pm on Thursday, October 1, to go after the victim, and that he left the scene after the assault took place. The man in his 40s remains in hospital in what is being described as a "serious but stable condition".
Officers are investigating the report at this time, and have said that, despite the enquiries being at an early stage, it is believed that the two men who were involved in this incident were known to one another. The force is also asking for information from the public as this work continues.
Emergency response
The North East Ambulance Service deployed one ambulance crew, and a unit from the Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene of the incident, with the victim being transported to hospital so that he could receive the required treatment for his injuries.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 6.05pm yesterday (Thursday) we received a report of a disturbance on Front Street in the Chilton Moor area of Houghton-le-Spring."
"It was reported that a man had got out of a vehicle before chasing another man into a premises and assaulting him with a bladed article. The suspect then left the scene."
"The victim, aged in his 40s, sustained serious injuries to his face in the incident. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Enquiries into the report are ongoing and at this early stage we believe those involved to be known to each other."

An NEAS spokesperson also said: "We were called to an incident in Houghton-Le-Spring at 18:17 on Thursday 1 October. We dispatched one ambulance crew and one HART crew (Hazardous Area Response Team) and one patient was taken to hospital."
