An unidentified man was rescued after falling into a vault toilet at Camp Edison in Shaver Lake, California, on Saturday. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. PT when the man dropped his sunglasses into the toilet and leaned in to retrieve them, losing his balance and tumbling into the chemical storage tank below.
Rescue Operation
Specialist rescue crews from Cal Fire were called to extricate the man from the confined tank beneath the waterless, non-flushing toilet. Sgt. Chris Tullus of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office told YourCentralValley.com that a caller reported the incident via a Spanish translator. "Law enforcement, Camp Edison staff and fire personnel responded and were able to safely get him out, decontaminate him, and he’ll be OK," Tullus said.
The man spent an estimated 10 to 15 minutes submerged in sewage. He was not injured but required a thorough hosing down by the Cal Fire crew before walking away.
Campground Facilities
Camp Edison, located about 50 miles northeast of downtown Fresno in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, has generally received positive reviews for its restroom facilities. A YouTube review from over a decade ago described the toilet as "very clean and well maintained," noting that it provides toiletries and electric lighting. Tripadvisor reviews give the campground a four-star rating, with one camper stating, "Restrooms were easily accessible and sparkling clean with nice hot water." However, another camper complained that "the restrooms were anything but pleasant."
Similar Incidents
This incident is not isolated. In 2023, a woman in Michigan had to be rescued from an outhouse toilet after falling in while trying to retrieve a dropped Apple Watch. In April, a tourist in Australia's Northern Territory spent several hours trapped waist-deep in excrement after a long-drop toilet collapsed. An eyewitness described the scene as "literally 'in deep shit,'" adding, "There’s shit, literal nappies, piss, all in that hole."
The Camp Edison incident serves as a reminder of the hazards of retrieving dropped items from vault toilets. Authorities advise against attempting such retrievals and recommend seeking assistance from campground staff.
