Man Blamed for Marriage Split Over Drunken One-Night Stand

A man is being blamed for the breakdown of a marriage after a drunken one-night stand with a former colleague in 2024. The husband of the woman has tracked him down and demands he persuade her to return home, but the man insists the situation has nothing to do with him.

One-Night Stand After Work Meal

The man, who wrote to agony aunt Jane O'Gorman, explained that he collaborated with the woman on a big project in 2024. At the end of it, their boss took a group out for a meal, and he and the woman ended up in a hotel room, where they had drunken sex until dawn. He did not know she was married because she never mentioned it, and they went their separate ways in the morning.

He was headhunted shortly after and moved to Texas. Now back in his home town, the husband storms that his wife is still infatuated with him. The husband says the man must tell her he is not interested and insist she returns home.

Husband's Claims and Stalking Accusations

The man says he has stopped drinking and his 'bad boy' past is a blur. He feels he is being stalked, as the husband keeps stopping him in the street and finding him in pubs. The husband wants him to talk some sense into his wife, believing that if she hears the man does not love her, she will go back.

In her response, Jane says the man needs to get tough. She advises him to explain that the marital woes are nothing to do with him, and that he is not prepared to speak to his ex-colleague or have any more contact with either of them. She warns him to make it clear he will go to a solicitor or the police if he or she troubles him again.

Advice to Stand Firm

Jane suggests the ex-colleague may be using the man as an excuse to get out of an unhappy marriage, because she is too cowardly or frightened to tell her husband she no longer loves him. She doubts the woman has been secretly in love with him all this time, and suspects there is something weird going on.

She advises him to stand firm, share the trauma with friends and family, and not allow anyone to get to him. She concludes that he may have to involve the authorities if the situation gets nasty.
