Video footage released by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service shows the killers of Kayden Moy celebrating after fleeing the murder scene at Irvine beach. Jay Stewart, 19, Cole Turley, 18, and a 15-year-old boy were sentenced to a combined 46 years in detention at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday.
Murder at Irvine Beach
On May 17 last year, the three teenagers fatally stabbed Kayden, 16, at the Ayrshire beauty spot. Stewart and the 15-year-old were found guilty following a trial, while Turley earlier pleaded guilty. The trio were part of the Murray Boys gang in East Kilbride, while Moy was a member of the rival Himshie group.
The footage shows Turley leading the way as they sprint along Irvine's Harbourside. Stewart is topless with a rucksack, while Turley and the 15-year-old wear tracksuits. Two of the boys put an arm around each other and one claps his hands together as they appear to celebrate. Members of the public can be seen enjoying the sunny weather in the background as the boys slow to a leisurely walk before disappearing out of sight.
Hiding in East Kilbride
Later that day, a doorbell camera captured them running to hide inside a flat in East Kilbride. The topless male youths are seen climbing upstairs, skipping steps in their haste. They attempt to cover their faces with their t-shirts and hold their hands up to the camera in a failed bid to conceal their identity.
Tensions between the teens spilled into violence after an initial confrontation at Irvine Beach. Kayden, who was unarmed, confronted the three teens. Turley produced a large lockback knife while Stewart held a police-style extendable baton. The trio pursued Kayden, causing him to fall to the ground where he was repeatedly stabbed. Kayden died from his injuries.
Sentencing
Judge Lord Scott told the killers they had gone to the beach that day with the intention of carrying out an attack. He said: “Two of you took weapons including, in the case of Cole Turley, the knife with which Kayden Moy was stabbed.” He added: “You didn’t care whether Kayden lived or died.”
The judge sentenced Stewart and Turley to a minimum of 16 years in detention, and the 15-year-old to a minimum of 14 years. Lord Scott also referred to a victim impact statement from Kayden’s family, in which they said they are “devastated beyond words” by his death.
