JJ Gabriel's Man Utd record bid at risk after Premier League ban

JJ Gabriel's hopes of becoming Manchester United's youngest ever player are fading after the 15-year-old was restricted from Premier League action and requested to leave the club. The midfielder turns 16 today (Tuesday, October 6), putting any chance of breaking David Gaskell's long-standing record in serious jeopardy.

Age rules block Gabriel's senior debut

Premier League regulations state that all eligible players must have turned 15 on or before 31 August of any playing season. As a result, Gabriel has only been able to play official senior football since the start of the 2026/27 campaign, having made his unofficial debut in a pre-season friendly last August.

He was expected to be selected for United's Carabao Cup clash with Brighton in September, where he would have surpassed former Red Devils goalkeeper David Gaskell's record. Gaskell was 16 years and 19 days old when he debuted in the 1956 FA Charity Shield, a record that has remained intact ever since.

Transfer request and Barcelona links

Before Gabriel could make history, he surprised Old Trafford officials by asking for his academy registration to be cancelled. He has not trained with United since, instead keeping fit in Barcelona amid speculation linking him with the Catalan giants, PSG and Real Madrid.

With less than three weeks remaining to break the record, the deteriorating relationship between his representatives and the club makes it extremely unlikely he will play for United. Gabriel holds an EU passport, meaning he could sign for a European Union club as early as next week, provided FIFA sanctions the move under strict regulations governing international transfers for players under 18.

United's response and legal threat

Gabriel's camp would need to satisfy certain requirements to push a move away, though it is understood they would not have pursued an exit without confidence in overcoming the regulatory obstacles. United remain hopeful of reaching a resolution to keep Gabriel after being left stunned by the request to leave.

Barcelona's sporting director Deco played down the speculation, saying: "There's nothing to say about this boy. It's normal we always have players linked with us. There's a huge market for that, even when they are young. We are not interested in any player in his situation."

United are also said to be weighing up legal action against any party who may negotiate and facilitate the England youth international's departure from Old Trafford.
