JJ Gabriel's Man Utd record bid at risk after exit request

JJ Gabriel's chances of breaking a 70-year-old Manchester United record are in severe doubt after the 15-year-old asked to leave the club last month. The teenager, widely regarded as one of the most promising academy prospects in recent times, has not trained with United since making the request.

Gabriel was unable to represent the United first team last season due to Premier League regulations, despite regularly training with the senior squad. The rules state that all eligible players must have celebrated their 15th birthday on or before August 31 of any playing season.

Record within reach

That meant Gabriel only became eligible for official senior football at the start of the 2026/27 season, having made his unofficial debut in a pre-season friendly in August. He was set to be selected for United's Carabao Cup clash with Brighton in September, where he would have broken former Red Devils goalkeeper David Gaskell's record. Gaskell was just 16 years and 19 days old when he made his debut in the 1956 FA Charity Shield, a record that has remained untouched since.

However, before Gabriel could make history, he stunned Old Trafford bosses by asking to leave the club last month. He requested that his academy registration be cancelled and has not trained with United since, instead maintaining his fitness in Barcelona amid links with the Catalan giants, PSG and Real Madrid.

Transfer complications

Gabriel turns 16 today (Tuesday, October 6), leaving any hopes that he would snatch the record from Gaskell at serious risk. He will have just under three weeks to break it, but it seems unlikely he will play within that timeframe given the breakdown in the relationship between his representatives and the club.

Another major risk is that he could leave United altogether. Gabriel possesses an EU passport, which means he will be allowed to join a European Union club next week, assuming FIFA approves the transfer. There are stringent regulations governing international moves for footballers under 18.

Gabriel's representatives will need to meet certain criteria to secure a departure from United, though it is believed they wouldn't have pursued an exit without confidence in their ability to navigate the bureaucratic hurdles. United remain optimistic about finding a solution to keep Gabriel at the club, having been shocked by his camp's request for a departure.

Club responses

Gabriel last trained at Carrington more than a fortnight ago. The teenager and his family have been frequent visitors to Barcelona in the past as Gabriel continues to work with local specialist coaches there.

While discussions have reportedly taken place with several clubs, including Barca, their sporting director, Deco, recently dismissed speculation about Gabriel. He said: "There's nothing to say about this boy. It's normal we always have players linked with us."

"There's a huge market for that, even when they are young. We are not interested in any player in his situation. I'm not sure what's happening, and if he's still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in that. First of all, we need to understand how the situation is before we try to do something. To speak about young, teenage players, it is not our business."

United are also reportedly considering legal action against any party who may negotiate and facilitate the England youth international's exit from Old Trafford.
