An Iran supporter invaded the pitch thinking his country had netted a sensational World Cup winner, only for VAR to rule the goal out just moments later against Egypt.
Dramatic Extra-Time Scenes in Seattle
The dramatic scenes unfolded as Lumen Field erupted following what Iranian football fans believed was a stunning extra-time winner. Iranian defender Shojae Khalilzadeh capitalised on a loose ball that fell to his feet, firing it into the back of the net three minutes into extra time with the scores level at 1-1.
Video footage filmed by spectators in the stands showed the fan, dressed in light-coloured clothing, bursting from the terraces near the touchline, where Iranian players were also jubilantly celebrating.
Security Breach and VAR Heartbreak
The Iranian supporter appeared to be clutching a mobile phone as he leapt over the security barrier and sprinted past one of the nine stewards in high-visibility yellow vests positioned on the pitch. He evaded the initial line of defence before being brought down by two officials who gave chase and apprehended him. The jubilant scenes amongst World Cup fans quickly turned to despair as VAR chalked off the goal.
VAR and FIFA officials ruled that Khalilzadeh had strayed beyond the last defender on the pitch prior to netting the goal. The supporter was restrained in handcuffs and removed from the pitch as the match concluded in a 1-1 draw.

The atmosphere was so electric that Khalilzadeh was booked for over-the-top celebrating, even producing a pair of black pixelated "deal with it" sunglasses that became a beloved internet meme throughout the 2010s, according to the Mirror US.

The pitch invasion came after a separate individual had previously attempted to storm the field during the USA's 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay, which launched Team USA's World Cup campaign.

Social media erupted in disbelief at how stewards permitted the incident to unfold on multiple occasions despite such stringent security measures. This year's tournament is safeguarded by robotic dogs, cybersecurity drones, and hundreds of security personnel deployed across venues in each host nation.
