Emergency services were called to a building fire on Eureka Place and Church Street in Ebbw Vale at around 5pm on Friday. Witnesses said the fire first erupted in the home's conservatory and within minutes the house was engulfed in flames.
A witness described the scene: "It was really bad, within a few minutes the house was up in flames. Everything inside there is destroyed."
Empty house and nearby business
The witness added: "The house has sat empty for around six or seven years. It is next to an independent business, a clothing shop that sells shoes, school bags, clothes and stuff like that. It must have been really worrying for them."
Fire crews from Ebbw Vale, Aberbargoed and Merthyr Tydfil were called to the scene. They tackled the fire before it spread to neighbouring properties. The witness noted: "We are not sure how it started, though there have been rumours of arson."
Police statement and road closure
Police issued a statement on Friday evening warning nearby residents to keep their doors and windows closed. A police spokesperson said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a fire on Church Street, Ebbw Vale and Eureka Place, Ebbw Vale. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene. If you live locally, please ensure all doors and windows are closed."
The statement continued: "Diversions are in place to ensure your safety. Please find an alternative route for your journey."
Traffic monitoring system Inrix shows Eureka Place remains closed to traffic on Saturday due to the house being unsafe. Gwent Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for an update.
