At least two people are reported to have been injured after a shooting in southern Germany, prompting a major police response and warnings for local residents to remain inside their homes.
Emergency services deployed to Berngau
Emergency services were deployed to the Berngau area of Bavaria shortly after 2pm local time following reports of gunfire. Police have established a large security cordon around the municipality in the Neumarkt district of Upper Palatinate as officers investigate the incident.
Authorities have not yet released details about the victims, but local reports suggest at least two people were injured. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, The Mirror reports.
Police helicopter and resident warning
A police helicopter has also been dispatched to aid officers on the ground, while nearby residents are asked to stay inside their homes while the operation is carried out.
"According to the findings available so far, several shots have been fired in the Berngau area. Currently, two injured persons are assumed", a statement from police confirmed.
"The population in the Berngau area is urgently requested to continue not leaving their homes and to remain there."
The local police also said: "Our emergency services are continuing to assess the situation on the ground. The Berngau area is cordoned off over a wide area.
"Please avoid this area. Additionally, to support the forces, we have our police helicopter in the airspace. We will continue to provide updates."
