Footballer Alex Sola flees crash scene after alleged drink drive

UD Almeria footballer Alex Sola has been suspended by his club after allegedly crashing his BMW into three parked vehicles and fleeing the scene. The 27-year-old was reportedly three times over the drink drive limit when police later breathalysed him.

Footage, apparently filmed from a flat overlooking the road, shows Sola rummaging around in the front seat of his hatchback. The hazard lights can be seen flashing, and the front of the car appears badly mangled, with one of the front wheels bent. Eventually, he shuts the door and runs away down the empty road, abandoning his car at the scene.

Crash details and police investigation

The incident reportedly happened on an avenue in Almeria, Spain, at around 7.20am on Sunday, October 4. According to initial investigations, Sola lost control of his high-powered BMW and went through a roundabout. He ended up travelling in the wrong direction and crashed into at least three parked cars – a Volkswagen, a Mini and, finally, a van.

Sola and the two other occupants fled the scene, with the striker and right winger later returning to collect some belongings. Police eventually located him and carried out a breathalyser test, which reportedly showed he was three times over the legal limit. Hours after being detained, he was released pending a fast-track trial over a possible drink-driving offence.

Club response and background

UD Almeria had played Burgos CF in the Segunda Division on Saturday afternoon (October 3), beating the visitors 2-1. Despite not playing, Sola had reportedly gone out to celebrate the victory. Sola, originally from San Sebastián, moved to UD Almeria from Granada CF in July. Despite spending much of his career in the second tier, he has made 64 La Liga appearances for Real Sociedad, Alaves and Getafe.

His current club has opened disciplinary proceedings against him and temporarily suspended him from the team.
