The family of a three-year-old boy who was seriously injured after allegedly being thrown into a crocodile enclosure has released a statement. The incident took place at Johnson's of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon, on June 18.
The injured boy, who has not been publicly identified, underwent multiple surgeries following the incident. Police have confirmed the boy remains at Addenbrooke's Hospital in a stable condition and faces a long road to recovery.
Arrest and Bail
A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident. He has since been released on bail after being found not to be fit for interview.
Family Statement
In a statement, the injured boy's family said: "We would like to thank the staff at the zoo who rescued our son from the enclosure. We are truly grateful for the public support and well-wishes we have received, as well as to everyone who has been directly involved in our son's care and recovery in hospital."
"Our attention remains focused on his recovery and supporting him through this extremely challenging and prolonged period of time," the family added, according to Cambridgeshire Live.
Fundraising Page
A fundraising page has been established to assist with the boy's recovery and rehabilitation, as well as to support the family throughout the coming months. The organiser of the fundraising page praised the "extraordinary bravery and quick actions of those nearby", noting that "the little boy was rescued by the zoo owners and rushed to hospital in a critical condition".
The fundraising page states: "After undergoing multiple surgeries, his condition is now stable, but he faces a long road to recovery. His parents are currently by his side in hospital, supporting him through both immediate and ongoing care physically and psychologically."
Any surplus funds remaining once the family's needs have been met will be directed towards charities and organisations within the Addenbrooke's Trust that provide assistance to other families experiencing comparable difficulties.
