Emergency services and United Utilities are responding to significant flooding on Elm Vale in Fairfield, Liverpool, after a reported burst sewer pipe. Discoloured water has covered the road near the junction with Prescot Road, prompting the evacuation of residents from their homes.
Residents describe powerful flow and road collapse
One resident at the scene told the Liverpool Echo: “The road has caved in on the other end of the road, the flow is really powerful. People aren’t allowed back into their homes.” Another person in the area added: “The road has caved in at the top on Prescot Road and burst the mains from what we can see. It's going into people's houses though.”
United Utilities statement and investigation
United Utilities has confirmed it is investigating the incident. A message on the company’s website for the L7 and L8 area, which includes Elm Vale, stated: “We’re currently investigating a problem in your area that may be causing no water or low water pressure. We’re really sorry for the inconvenience and are working as quickly as possible to get your taps flowing again. If your water looks discoloured, don’t worry - this can happen when natural sediments in the pipes are disturbed. We’ll continue to monitor the situation to make sure your supply returns to normal as soon as possible.”
Traffic disruption and police response
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports that “emergency burst sewer repairs” are taking place at the scene. Merseyside Police has been approached for comment. A reporter is at the scene providing further updates on the incident.
