A former primary school teacher has admitted tickling boys with an electric toothbrush as part of a disturbing 'game'. Joseph Haffenden, 32, from West Sussex, also used a feather and his hands to tickle two boys under their clothes, according to police.
Court appearance and charges
He had been due to stand trial accused of six counts of sexual assault by touching and six of false imprisonment. But he admitted the charges at Lewes Crown Court on Monday (July 20).
Police statement
Det Sgt Ellen Jones from Sussex Police said: 'I am grateful for both young victims in this investigation for reporting Haffenden’s disturbing crimes and bringing him to our attention.'
'We were able to act swiftly and bring him into custody while working with our partners and the school to ensure there were no wider safeguarding risks.'
Investigation and evidence
Haffenden told the boys it was a 'game', but the children revealed what happened to them and contacted Sussex Police. Officers arrested the pervert while specialist teams were sent in to support the boys and their families. Police searched Haffenden's home where they found items suggesting he had an 'interest' in children. Sussex Police said officers also found evidence that backed up what the boys were saying.
Teaching role and future sentencing
Haffenden was suspended from his teaching role and has since been dismissed, according to the police. Det Sgt Jones urged any other victims of sexual offences to report it to the police on 101. Haffenden was remanded in custody. He is due to appear for sentencing on September 3.
