Six truck drivers have escaped with only minor injuries after a catastrophic crash involving vehicles carrying flammable materials on the Hume Highway near Breadalbane, New South Wales. Police described the outcome as “nothing short of a miracle.”
Crash details and immediate response
According to police, two trucks collided while entering a roadside rest stop just after 5am on Tuesday. One of the trucks then crashed into four other rigs. Among the vehicles was a truck carrying eight tonnes of butane cans, which triggered multiple small explosions when fire crews arrived. Other trucks were transporting alcohol, resin, and memory foam, all of which fueled the subsequent blaze.
All six trucks were destroyed in the fire, which has since been extinguished. Acting Inspector Vladimir Mijok confirmed that all six male drivers have been accounted for and are receiving treatment.
Statements from authorities
“Emergency services were confronted with a fairly horrific scene this morning and due to the smoke and the flames, we weren’t able to get close enough,” Mijok said. “It is nothing short of a miracle that all six drivers managed to make it out and none of them with serious injuries either.”
The drivers suffered minor injuries and were treated by NSW Ambulance crews. Two were taken to Goulburn Hospital for mandatory testing.
Ongoing road closures and investigation
Fire and Rescue NSW deployed seven fire trucks, including two hazardous materials vehicles, and up to 40 firefighters. The Hume Highway remained closed in both directions as of 11am, with motorists advised to allow over an hour for extra travel time via the Federal and Barton highways through Canberra.
Police warned that the road may take some time to reopen, especially northbound lanes, due to extensive debris and hazardous materials. A crime scene has been established, and the crash investigation unit will assist with inquiries.
