A delivery driver has been taken to hospital after a row erupted with a taxi driver on a street in Wallasey. Merseyside Police were called at 4.10pm on Sunday, August 23, following reports that a delivery driver, a man in his 30s, had been assaulted on Rice Hey Road in Egremont and suffered injuries to his face and head.
Arrest made after assault
The driver of the private-hire taxi reportedly left the scene. Following enquiries, a man in his 40s was located and arrested on suspicion of assault. He is currently in custody and enquiries remain ongoing.
The delivery driver was taken to hospital where he is currently waiting for an assessment. When the ECHO visited the scene, a police cordon was in place on Rice Hey Road, with multiple officers present and police vehicles stationed at either end of the street.
Witness describes the incident
Mr Price, 75, who has lived on Rice Hey Road for 38 years, told the ECHO that one driver punched another during the incident. He said: “A car drove down one end of the road, and another driver drove up the other, and they couldn’t get past each other. So one of the drivers stuck his nose out the window, and there were words exchanged.
"Then the same driver got out of his car and went to the passenger side of the other car, and more words were said. Then the driver punched the other driver before he went around to the driver's side and punched him some more. It happened around 4pm/4.10pm I was about to sit down and eat my dinner when I heard all the commotion.”
Residents highlight parking issues
Two women who also live on the street where the incident took place said: “One car was reversing slowly, and the other driver was in front, and there was an altercation between them. The driver got out of his car and assaulted the other driver. The driver got out of his car, sat on the street, and called the police.
"We have so many problems on this road because there’s not enough parking, and there are so many vehicles. Loads of people use it as a run-through, it’s a major problem.”
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “Anyone who witnessed the altercation or has any information which could assist our enquiries should contact Merseyside Police social media desk using X or Facebook @MerPolCC.
