Joseph Traylor, a Kentucky man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of his 15-month-old son in a motorcycle accident. Traylor, from Princeton, Kentucky, strapped his son, Terry Traylor, to his chest before attempting a wheelie and spinning out of control, resulting in the child's death.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
On Friday, October 2, Traylor was sentenced at Caldwell Circuit Court after pleading guilty to amended charges of vehicular homicide while under the influence of drugs or substances. He also pleaded guilty to reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle under the influence under aggravating circumstances.
Police reported that Traylor was riding up a one-way street when the incident occurred. He recklessly strapped his son to his chest before attempting a wheelie. Soon after, Traylor lost control and crashed into a telephone pole.
Fatal Crash Details
The incident happened in July 2024. Both father and son were rushed to hospital, where Terry was pronounced dead. Traylor was later airlifted to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. After his release from hospital, Traylor was arrested and initially charged with murder before entering into a plea.
Prosecutors said Baby Terry's death has had a devastating impact on his family. Circuit Judge Jamus Redd called the case a tragedy and shared his hope that the prison sentence would bring closure to the family. Traylor is not eligible for probation or shock probation. Redd also said Traylor must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
Family Tributes
Following his death, Terry's family shared tributes to the baby, who was described as a 'blessing to us all'. His obituary reads: "Terry's spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his family and all who cherished him."
On his memorial page, his cousin Lexie posted: "Monkeybutt cousin Lexie will never forget you. those hugs those kisses. I miss them so much. You saved me in so many ways during my pregnancy I'd do anything to hold you and see you just smile at me or just fall asleep on me any time I held you! Forever your world babyboy!"
His Aunt Dana added: "We may not know why your life was taken way too soon but one day we hope to get the answer. No one could've known that it would happen to you. It broke me into a million pieces. I'm sorry you didn't have the chance to experience what the world has to offer. Your loss will always leave a hole in our lives."
