A father bled to death on a bench after accidentally falling asleep against a knife in his rucksack, an inquest has concluded. Robert Brown, 57, was found slumped on a bench beside a canal footpath in Northampton on 1 August last year, sparking a major murder investigation before the coroner ruled his death a tragic accident.
Discovery and Initial Investigation
A cyclist discovered Mr Brown around 6.30am, noticing blood seeping through gaps in the bench. Police launched an extensive search of the River Nene and arrested three individuals on suspicion of murder. All were later released without charge.
Detectives initially believed Mr Brown had been killed by a third party, or that the death was accidental or self-harm. However, after months of investigation, they concluded in February this year that the injury was "likely to have been unintentionally self-inflicted."
Inquest Findings
An inquest heard that Mr Brown, who struggled with alcohol addiction, likely fell into a deep sleep and rolled onto a knife carried in his backpack. The single-edged five-inch (13cm) blade sliced through the bag, all three layers of his coat, and cut his arm, causing a 3cm wound that led to fatal blood loss.
Fibers from the blade matched layers of his coat, and traces of his DNA were identified on the knife. No blood was found on the blade, but the evidence supported that the knife belonged to the victim. Senior Coroner for Northamptonshire Anne Pember recorded a conclusion of accidental death, calling it a "tragic accident."
Police and Family Tributes
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of Northamptonshire Police stated there was no motive for murder and expressed belief that it was a "tragic accidental death." A post-mortem examination gave the provisional cause of death as acute blood loss from a wound to the left upper arm.
Mr Brown's family paid heartfelt tribute. His parents and brothers said: "Rob was quite a character and always full of fun. He was our real-life Peter Pan – the boy who never grew up. Everyone who knew Rob just loved him. He definitely had the gift of the gab and could talk the hind legs off a donkey. He had a heart of gold and was always ready to help others."
His son Daniel, daughter Tonia, and grandchildren said: "Our hearts are broken, but everyone's kind words bring us comfort and show how much of an impact our dad had on the people he met. He loved to talk to anyone and everyone! Dad will leave a massive gap in our family with his cheeky smile and kind heart."
His partner Julia added: "At school I always had the hots for Robert, he was the school heartthrob. Being with Robert there was never a dull moment... He would do anything for me, he was a selfless person and always put others first. I'll hold on to our laughter and adventures."
