Weatherfield has witnessed a staggering number of deaths since Coronation Street first aired in 1960. The first major character death occurred in 1961 when Ida Barlow, played by Noel Dyson, was hit by a bus. Since then, the cobbles have seen more than 30 confirmed murders, committed by 23 known killers. While some murderers faced justice, others managed to evade conviction. Here are five killers who got away with murder in Weatherfield.
Sarah Platt and the Death of Theo Silverton
In recent months, Sarah Platt has been hiding the death of Theo Silverton. The secret was revealed to viewers during a dramatic dinner party hosted by Sarah and her partner, DC Kit Green, with Gary Windass, Maria, Todd Grimshaw, and Summer Spellman as guests. Maria accused Sarah and Gary of having an affair, but the real reason for their suspicious behaviour was Sarah's role in Theo's death. Theo's body was found by Betsy Swain in April on the night of her mother Lisa Swain's wedding to Carla Connor. Flash-forward scenes in February had shown Betsy being interviewed by police after discovering a dead body. It was later confirmed that Theo was the victim, killed after trying to torment Todd one last time. A murder investigation followed, with Todd, Summer, Gary, George Shuttleworth, Christina Boyd, and Theo's ex-wife Danielle Silverton as suspects. Sarah confessed the truth to Todd, but Kit remains determined to pin the murder on Todd. Whether Sarah will get away with murder remains to be seen.
Jim McDonald and the Manslaughter of Jez Quigley
Charlie Lawson played Jim McDonald from 1989 to 2018. Jim killed drug dealer Jez Quigley in a revenge attack after Jez beat up Jim's son, Steve. Jim was given eight years for manslaughter after brutally beating Jez and locking him in a cellar in February 1999. Jez's body was not discovered until 2000. Jez stood trial for murder but walked free. Another of Jez's victims was Des Barnes, who suffered a fatal heart attack after being beaten by Jez's gang.
Katy Harris and the Murder of Tommy Harris
Lucy-Jo played Katy Harris from 2002 to 2005. Katy's forbidden relationship with older man Martin Platt led her to murder her father, Tommy, with a wrench. Katy discovered she was diabetic in 2003 and fell in love with nurse Martin Platt, who was 20 years her senior. Her father Tommy disapproved and fabricated a story that Martin was having an affair. Heartbroken, Katy aborted her child but later learned the truth. When she confronted Tommy and he showed no remorse, she bludgeoned him to death. Her mother Angela tried to take the blame, but overcome with guilt, Katy took her own life.
Kylie Platt and the Killing of Callum Logan
Paula Lane played Kylie Platt from 2010 to 2016. Kylie killed her ex Callum Logan by hitting him with a wrench when she found him attacking her sister-in-law Sarah during a live episode in 2015. Kylie had previously sold her son Max to her half-sister Becky and later fought to get him back. After her departure, Kylie was stabbed to death by Clayton Hibbs, an acquaintance of Callum.
Gary Windass and the Deaths of Rana Habeeb and Rick Neelan
Mikey North plays Gary Windass. Gary's factory sabotage caused the roof of Underworld to collapse in 2019, killing nurse Rana on her wedding day. He got away with his role in Rana's death. Later, Gary killed loan shark Rick Neelan in self-defence after Rick dug a grave for Gary. Gary buried Rick in the grave. The secret came to light in 2022 when Laura Neelan discovered Gary killed her estranged husband, but she did not reveal it to the whole street.
