A 29-year-old man arrested in connection with a suspected hit-and-run in Consett has been bailed, while a 33-year-old pedestrian remains in a critical condition. Durham Constabulary officers were on Sherburn Terrace throughout Tuesday following reports that a pedestrian was hit by a van at around 9.45pm on Monday night.
Victim's condition and arrest
The victim, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment. His condition has been described as "critical but stable."
The van driver, a 29-year-old man, was identified, arrested, and taken into police custody. He has now been bailed until December 14, and the road reopened yesterday afternoon after a closure while officers conducted their enquiries.
Police appeal for information
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "A man has been arrested following a suspected hit-and-run in Consett on Monday night. Sherburn Terrace was closed after a pedestrian was hit by a van at around 9.45pm."
