The Guardian has uncovered that Catholic church leaders extended Anthony Odiong's term as pastor despite knowing of multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him. Odiong was convicted of criminal clergy sexual assault and sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2024.
Key Findings from the Investigation
Church officials in Austin received the first complaint against Odiong in 2011 but waited until 2018 to notify New Orleans counterparts. Despite this, Odiong was allowed to continue as pastor at St Anthony of Padua church in Luling, Louisiana, with extensions granted by Archbishop Gregory Aymond and Bishop John Ayah.
High-ranking Officials Knew of Complaints
Bishop Joe Vásquez of Austin wrote to Aymond in 2018 requesting Odiong refrain from ministry, citing complaint history. However, Odiong continued serving until his suspension in November 2023 after a sermon dehumanizing LGBTQ+ people.
Legal Downfall and Survivor Reactions
Odiong's conviction followed a complaint from a woman whose son witnessed her sexual relationship with the priest. Survivors expressed disappointment with the church's response, calling for accountability.
