Car ploughs into Starbucks in Ayrshire as emergency services race to retail park

A car has ploughed into a Starbucks at a retail park in North Ayrshire, leaving a huge hole in the storefront. The vehicle is believed to have smashed into the popular coffee shop situated in Riverway Retail Park in Irvine at around 8am on Tuesday, August 18.

Emergency services respond

Emergency services, including Police Scotland, raced to the scene. Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed they did not attend. It is currently unclear how exactly the dramatic incident came about.

Photos taken at the scene, and shared with the Record, show the aftermath of the smash. One half of the store's façade is completely destroyed, with a gaping hole and mountains of glass lying where the window was.

Vehicle wreckage and witness account

A mangled black Yaris can be seen parked up in one of the spaces, its front bumper wrecked and the driver's door flung wide open. People can be seen gathered in shock outside the food and drink spot. Uniformed officers and traffic wardens stand guard while the scene is taped off. It is unclear whether the Starbucks had to be evacuated as a result.

A man who witnessed the aftermath said: "The store was still open when I went in for a coffee. All I saw was the police taking statements and taping the car off. I turned up when it had already happened."

Police Scotland have been asked for comment.
