A British family's holiday to France became a nightmare when they were evacuated from the seaside town of Biscarrosse due to wildfires. Melissa Sood, 33, her husband Sunny, 42, their 14-year-old daughter, and her brother and sister were forced to sleep on cardboard boxes on the beach before a family friend offered them the use of their garden in Sanguinet.
Evacuation and temporary shelter
The family had been visiting Melissa's grandmother when the wildfires forced them to leave. They spent time stranded on the beach, sleeping on cardboard, until the friend provided a garden for shelter. Since Friday, they have been sleeping in a supermarket tent in that garden.
Unable to return home
The family is from Basingstoke, Hampshire, but cannot return because roads to the airport are blocked by the wildfires. They also cannot access Melissa's grandmother's house to retrieve their house keys. They have no idea when they will be able to return home.
