BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent made a tragic announcement just minutes into the programme on Wednesday, September 30, revealing that three teenagers have died after a car accident in Sunderland.
"Police in Sunderland say two teenage boys and one teenage girl have died after a car came off the road and plunged into the River Wear," the presenter said. "Four people were in the vehicle at the time. A 17-year-old boy who managed to get out of the water has been arrested."
Arrest and hospital treatment
Nugent continued: "He's currently being treated in hospital for minor injuries."
Northumbria Police received reports at around 1.30pm that a black Audi A3 had left the road at Panns Bank, near Wearmouth Bridge, and entered the water.
