A North Carolina woman who vanished 24 years ago has been found alive and well, but her daughter is left with mixed emotions after learning her mother does not wish to be contacted. Michele Hundley Smith, 62, was located by the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office on Friday at an undisclosed location within the state.
Amanda Smith, who was 14 when her mother disappeared in December 2001, expressed her turmoil in a social media post. 'I am all over the map!' she wrote. 'Will I have a relationship once more with my mom? Honestly, I can't answer that because I don't even know.' She described feeling 'ecstatic, pissed, and heartbroken' simultaneously.
Michele's husband reported her missing on New Year's Eve 2001 after she left their home in Eden, North Carolina, saying she was going Christmas shopping in Martinsville, Virginia. Despite extensive investigations by multiple agencies, her whereabouts remained unknown until last week, when new information led authorities to her.
Sheriff Sam Page told People magazine that Michele left due to 'ongoing domestic issues', though the sheriff's office had no records of such problems before her disappearance. The case has been referred to prosecutors to consider charges, including abandonment, but no action has been taken yet.
Amanda defended her father against accusations of involvement, stating, 'My dad has been proven innocent.' She acknowledged her parents had marital issues but stressed her mother did not leave solely because of a bad marriage.
