A brother and sister in Colombia have died after becoming trapped in a freezer while playing hide-and-seek. Sauri and Darien Tiller, aged eight and five, suffocated when the lid of the freezer closed behind them and they could not open it.
The children were left alone at home in Vista Hermosa, Meta department, while their parents went shopping. Their father, Brayan Guevara Trivino, said the freezer was unplugged when they left at around 7pm on Saturday. He told Colombian newspaper El Tiempo: 'The children climbed in and got inside. They played, the lid fell, it closed on them and they suffocated.'
The parents returned 20 minutes later and found the children inside the freezer. They were taken to hospital but doctors were unable to revive them. The siblings' mother, Karen Tiller Pana, paid tribute on social media, saying: 'Thank you my babies for having given me the greatest joy in these eight years of life.'
Local mayor Juan Andres Gomez expressed condolences and urged parents to supervise children closely, stating: 'A moment of negligence can turn into an irreversible tragedy within minutes.' The children's school, Los Centauros, also issued a statement of condolence.
