Parents charged after baby starved to death

Kylie Smith, 25, and Adam Johnson, 26, both from St Helens in Merseyside, have been charged with causing or allowing the death of their one-year-old son, Maero Johnson. The couple were pictured for the first time after being charged.

Incident details

Merseyside Police say officers were called shortly after the one-year-old died in hospital despite medical staff's best efforts on August 23, 2023. A Home Office postmortem examination confirmed Maero died of ketonic hypoglycaemia and severe malnutrition.

Charges and court appearance

Police subsequently charged the parents with causing/allowing the death of a child, child neglect, and possession of a controlled class B drug, cannabis. They are both due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Thursday, August 13.
