A mother has died after falling from the tenth floor of a tower block in Madrid while holding her three-year-old twins. The 48-year-old woman, named only as Maria, was killed instantly in the incident, which occurred just after 9am on Saturday in the Ciudad Lineal neighbourhood.
The twins were rushed to separate hospitals with critical injuries. One is being treated at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital, while the other is at Hospital Infantil Niño Jesús. Medical teams have expressed concern that the more seriously injured child may not survive.
According to reports, Maria had bought Christmas presents for the children from a nearby shop just hours before the tragedy. The family had gathered a day earlier to celebrate the twins’ birthday.
A spokesman for the city ambulance service confirmed the woman’s death and said an investigation is ongoing. National police are leading the inquiry, with local police and firefighters also mobilised.
The incident has devastated the family just days before Christmas. No further health updates on the children have been issued.
