A family has been devastated just days before Christmas after a mother fell to her death from a tenth-floor apartment in Madrid while holding her three-year-old twin children.
Horror in a Quiet Neighbourhood
The tragic incident occurred shortly after 9am on Saturday, December 6, at a residential block in the Ciudad Lineal district of the Spanish capital. The area, described as a quiet residential neighbourhood roughly 30 minutes from the city centre, was cordoned off by a large police presence.
The 48-year-old mother, identified only as Maria, was killed instantly in the fall. Her young twins, a boy and a girl, were rushed alive to separate hospitals in the city but remain in a critically injured condition.
Children Fight for Life in Hospital
One child was admitted to Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital, while the other was taken to the specialist Hospital Infantil Niño Jesús. Medical teams hold grave concerns for the more seriously injured of the two, with fears they may not survive.
The family had gathered just a day earlier to celebrate the children’s third birthday. It is understood Maria had bought presents for the youngsters from a nearby shop only hours before the tragedy unfolded.
Emergency Response and Investigation
A spokesman for the city ambulance service confirmed: "We can confirm the death of a woman who plunged from the tenth floor of a block of flats in Ricardo Ortiz. Two children aged three have been taken to different hospitals."
National police have launched an investigation, with local police and firefighters also mobilised to the scene. Witnesses reported seeing an air ambulance hovering overhead and investigators were spotted working on the ninth floor of the building.
The incident follows another unrelated tragedy in the UK, where a 25-year-old man died after falling from height at a block of flats. A 37-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault in that case remains in custody.
