Kate Garraway offered support to the mother of a murder victim as she appeared on Good Morning Britain. Lisa Squire, whose 21-year-old daughter Libby was raped and killed in 2019, joined the ITV programme to discuss the criminal justice system in light of the Simon Levy case, reports the Mirror.
This week, Levy was sentenced to a whole life order after being found guilty of murdering two women and raping another. He was on bail while committing some of the crimes.
Mixed feelings after sentencing
As Lisa joined Kate and co-host Tom Swarbrick on the show, Kate noted that Levy's sentencing must "bring back a mixture of feelings."
"And that was only in 2019, so I'm sure still very raw," she said. "The reason why you want to speak about this, even though it must be hideously painful, is you can't believe when you look at the Simon Levy case at some of the parallels."
Libby's story
Explaining what happened to Libby, Lisa said: "Libby went out for a night out with friends on January the 31st of 2019. Was refused entry to a club, sent back home. She went for a walk and ended up sitting in a bus stop. And unbeknown to anybody at the time, there was a serious sexual predator in the area.
"He was cruising the street looking for someone to commit voyeurism against and ended up targeting my daughter. Picked her up and drove her to a remote playing field where he raped and murdered her and then disposed of her body in a river. She was missing for 48 days."
Call for change
Presenter Tom added: "Because I understand it in the run-up to what happened to Libby that night. This man had been going around performing acts of voyeurism."
Kate appeared to gasp "oh" after listening to Lisa share her story. "It's utterly utterly sickening," she said.
Libby was murdered by Pawel Relowicz in January 2019. He was jailed for life in 2021. Lisa is now calling for change in the system, telling Kate and Tom: "We need to completely overhaul our criminal justice system."
