Andy Paul Ferrarone, a 33-year-old father-to-be, died after a freak rock climbing accident near Castle Rock in Big Bear, California. He slipped on a rocky slope, fell about 20 feet, and suffered severe head trauma on July 12. Despite rescue efforts, he died on July 15.
The Incident
At around 5:25 p.m. local time on July 12, Ferrarone slipped while climbing near Castle Rock, according to police. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Aviation Unit responded and performed CPR before airlifting him to Loma Linda University Medical Center. He was placed on life support but succumbed to his injuries three days later.
Ferrarone was an avid adventurer with passions including snowboarding, tennis, photography, sailing, and art. He was raised in Philadelphia and worked as a software engineer, according to his obituary.
Survived by Pregnant Wife
He is survived by his wife, Nina, who is nine weeks pregnant. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her. The fundraising page states: 'Nina is 8 weeks pregnant, and while she bravely committed to keep the baby, she now faces the challenge of preparing for parenthood alone.'
The page adds: 'As a flight attendant, Nina took time off work when she learned she was expecting, and now she must navigate rent, a mountain of medical bills, and the costs of welcoming a child without Andy by her side.'
GoFundMe Campaign
Donations will help cover Andy’s life support medical bills, rent, and essential baby supplies. As of the report, over $58,000 has been raised. The campaign aims to ease the financial burden and allow Nina to keep the home she and Andy made in San Diego.
