Family thanks 'special angel' after girl, 6, killed in van crash

The family of a six-year-old girl who died after being struck by a van in Northern Ireland has publicly thanked a woman who assisted them in getting the child to hospital, describing her as a "special angel."

Collision and Immediate Response

Kourtney McCormick suffered fatal injuries in a collision that occurred in the Springfarm Heights area of Newry on Sunday, June 21. She was rushed to Daisy Hill Hospital but later died. A 40-year-old woman arrested in connection with the incident was released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Family's Heartfelt Tribute

In a statement released through Paul McEvoy Funeral Directors, Kourtney's family expressed their "deepest gratitude" for the support they received. They specifically thanked the woman who arrived at the scene and helped transport Kourtney to the emergency department: "You are our special angel; we are internally grateful to you."

The family also praised the medical teams at Daisy Hill Hospital for their efforts and for the "beautiful guard of honour" they gave Kourtney as she was being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital. They extended thanks to the surgeons and ICU staff at the Royal Victoria Hospital for giving them the chance to hold their daughter and say goodbye.

Community and Wider Support

The tribute acknowledged the support from Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers, a priest who supported the family at both hospitals, Kourtney's school—St. Patrick's the Meadow—and the wider community. "Words cannot adequately express our heartfelt thanks for the overwhelming support our family has received from Kourtney’s primary school... our entire community and all around the world," the family said.

They also thanked Kourtney's friends, neighbours, family, and local businesses that provided food during the wake.

Upcoming Memorial Service

A Months Mind Mass for Kourtney is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at 7:30 pm in St. Brigid’s Chapel, Newry, according to Belfast Live.
