A young child's grave in a Wigan cemetery has been vandalised, causing 'great distress' to the family. The marble surround of the grave was broken and ornaments placed on display were thrown aside.
The incident occurred in the baby garden at Westwood Cemetery, Westwood Lane, Ince, at some point between April 4 and July 25, 2026, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
Police investigation
A GMP Wigan spokesperson said: 'On Saturday, July 25, police received a report of damage which had been caused to a child's grave within the baby garden at Westwood Cemetery, Westwood Lane. This included damage to the marble surround and ornaments on display which were discarded. Officers have attended the cemetery and spoken with the family with enquiries now underway.'
'This incident has understandably caused great distress to the family and our thoughts are with them. At this stage of the investigation, we believe the damage to have been caused between April 4, 2026, and July 25, 2026.'
Police are urging anyone with information or CCTV footage to contact GMP quoting crime reference number CRI/06LL/0019079/26. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
