A British holidaymaker was found dead in his hotel room in Phuket on Monday (August 3) after a "do not disturb" sign remained on the door for days, according to reports.
Discovery at Patong Hotel
The tourist, identified by staff as a 41-year-old British national, had been staying alone at a hotel in the Patong area of the Thai island since July 24. The hotel's head housekeeper said the room was last cleaned on 27 July, and after that the guest had put up the sign requesting not to be disturbed on the door, a common feature in hotels. Staff then didn't enter the room in the days that followed out of respect for the sign, The Sun reports.
No Signs of Foul Play
He was due to check out on Monday, and the head housekeeper knocked on the door at around 11am local time. After getting no response, she entered to find him lifeless and contacted police, Khaosod English reports. Police attended the scene shortly after, as per the Thai news outlet. Law enforcement said they found no evidence of either forced entry, a struggle or of the room being ransacked.
Post-Mortem Underway
A preliminary examination indicated that the British national had died around 12 to 24 hours before the body was found. The body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital, with police now waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Authorities are working with the British Embassy to inform the man's relatives of the tragic news, and arrange the formal release of his body for repatriation.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Thailand."
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, located in the Andaman Sea off the country's west coast. It's a highly popular holiday destination, among the most sought after spots for British tourists, along with the capital, Bangkok in the centre of the country, and the city of Chiang Mai, in the north.
