The parents of a three-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a crocodile enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Cambridgeshire have confirmed he has undergone five surgeries and faces at least two more, with a long rehabilitation ahead.
Incident Details
Police were called to the zoo at 1:24pm on June 18 after reports that the boy had sustained serious injuries while inside the enclosure. Zoo co-owner Tracey Johnson reportedly jumped in to rescue the child, and police confirmed he was pulled out by staff. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but was later bailed after being assessed as not fit for interview; the suspect reportedly has learning difficulties and had been on a trip with carers.
Parents' Update
In an update posted on a fundraising page, the boy's parents said: "We are extremely grateful for everyone's generosity. We could never thank you enough for the support you have given our family in this horrible time." They added: "We have been living at the hospital for two weeks now and our son has undergone five surgeries." They noted that at least two more surgeries are required and described the past fortnight as "a very uncertain and unsettling time."
Rehabilitation and Fundraising
The parents stated: "His rehabilitation journey is uncertain but we do know that it won't be a short process." The fundraising page, set up to support the boy's recovery and provide financial stability, has raised over £25,000. Donations have been used to cover expenses while both parents are away from work for an unknown period. The family plans to use further donations for rehabilitation and to give back to the hospital that has supported them.
The nature of the boy's injuries has not been disclosed, but Cambridgeshire Police previously said he suffered serious injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
