Police have launched an appeal for information following the death of a woman on the M6 near Wigan. The motorway was closed for hours after officers were called to a concern for welfare at the bridge of Downall Green Road, above the M6 southbound, this morning (January 16).
Emergency services attended the scene between junctions 25 and 24, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification has not yet taken place, but there are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, which occurred at around 7:50am, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward. They are particularly interested in anyone who may have collided with something in the carriageway at that location.
Greater Manchester Police thanked the public for their patience during the disruption. Anyone with information should contact the SCIU on 0161 856 4741, quoting log 528 of 16/01/2025, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
