The Merseyside community is in mourning today following the tragic death of a much-loved primary school teacher, Peter Dooley, in what police are describing as a devastating road rage attack.
Merseyside Police were called to the scene on Birchley Road in St Helens on Tuesday afternoon following reports of a serious altercation between a van driver and a pedestrian. Emergency services rushed to the location, but despite their best efforts, 55-year-old Mr Dooley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges Brought in Shocking Case
In a swift development, authorities have charged 41-year-old van driver Lee Atkins with murder. Atkins, of Hempstead Close in St Helens, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court yesterday and has been remanded in custody pending a further hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew McCourt of Merseyside Police confirmed the incident is being treated as a targeted attack following a roadside disagreement that turned fatal.
