A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a school headteacher following a fatal road traffic collision in Trafford. Michael Mullins, 56, who had been headteacher of Stretford Grammar School for 17 years, died at the scene after a crash involving a car and his bicycle on Paddock Lane, Altrincham, at around 6.10pm on April 20.
Simon Richardson, 34, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance. He appeared via videolink at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday, June 15, with members of both families present in the public gallery.
During the brief hearing, administrative matters were discussed between prosecutor Phil Barnes KC, defence counsel Jaime Hamilton KC, and Judge Maurice Greene. A provisional trial date has been set for October 12, expected to last four weeks. Richardson was remanded in custody until the next hearing on July 29.
