Driver Sentenced for Continuing M1 Journey After Car Lost Wheel in High-Speed Crash

A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 22 months in prison and disqualified from driving for nearly five years after driving a car down the M1 motorway with a missing wheel following a collision with the central reservation. Omar Makhluf, of Keel Close in Barking, pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving and one count of driving whilst unfit through drugs at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday 6 February 2026.

Incident Details and Motorway Camera Footage

The alarming incident occurred at approximately 3:30pm on 16 February 2025 on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between junction 12 at Toddington in Bedfordshire and junction 14 at Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire. Motorway cameras captured the vehicle, which had lost a wheel after hitting the central reservation, continuing its journey for several miles along the busy motorway.

Thames Valley Police reported that Makhluf was later pictured getting out of the damaged car at a service station. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident, despite the obvious danger posed by a vehicle traveling on three wheels at motorway speeds.

Arrest, Charges, and Sentencing

Makhluf was arrested on the same day as the incident and subsequently charged on 13 August 2025. In addition to the 22-month prison sentence, he was disqualified from driving for four years and 336 days for this offence and other driving offences committed elsewhere in the country.

James Holmes, investigating officer of the Roads Policing Unit, commented on the case, stating: “This incident on the M1 could easily have had far more serious consequences, and we are thankful that no one was injured. Makhluf has now admitted his actions in court and has been sentenced. Dangerous driving puts lives at risk, and we remain committed to keeping our roads safe. We encourage everyone to drive responsibly and safely.”

Police Advice for Motorway Emergencies

Thames Valley Police issued a reminder to all drivers about proper procedure during motorway emergencies. They advised: “If you damage your vehicle while driving on a motorway, pull over to the side and alert police as soon as it is safe to do so.” This guidance underscores the importance of immediate action to prevent further accidents and ensure public safety on high-speed roads.

The case serves as a stark warning about the consequences of dangerous driving behaviors, particularly when combined with drug impairment, and highlights the vigilance of law enforcement in prosecuting such offences to maintain road safety standards.
