A man in his 80s has died and three others have been hospitalised following a serious road traffic incident involving a Bus Éireann double-decker bus in Dublin city centre. The collision occurred on North Earl Street shortly after 12:30pm on Wednesday.
The victim, a pedestrian, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man, aged in his 20s, is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A female pedestrian in her 30s and the bus driver, a woman in her 50s, have also been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services, including over 20 firefighter/paramedics from Dublin Fire Brigade, responded to the scene. Gardaí have closed Talbot Street from Gardiner Street and Marlborough Street from Cathal Brugha Street, with local diversions in place. The scene has been preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Bus Éireann confirmed that one of its vehicles was involved in the incident, but stated that the bus was not in service at the time. The company said it is offering full support to the authorities.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed sympathy for those affected, stating: “Our thoughts are with all of those who've been affected and impacted by a very serious accident.” Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and Lord Mayor of Dublin Ray McAdam also offered condolences and praised the response of emergency services.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone with photographs or video of the incident to make them available to investigators at Store Street Garda Station, rather than sharing them publicly.
