Boy, 13, hurt in Houghton-le-Spring bike-car collision

A 13-year-old boy was injured after a car collided with his bicycle in Houghton-le-Spring on Sunday afternoon. Emergency services were called to the scene near Houghton Road, in the Grasswell area, just before 12.30pm.

Emergency response and hospital care

Northumbria Police officers and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) attended the incident, which occurred as the boy was crossing the road. Police confirmed that his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the car remained at the scene to help officers understand what happened. NEAS reported that an ambulance crew was deployed to the area, and the patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further care.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just before 12.30pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of a collision on Grasswell Terrace in Houghton-le-Spring. It was reported that a car struck a pedal cyclist as they crossed the road."

"Emergency services attended and found a 13-year-old boy had suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening, and he was taken to hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to assist with police enquiries."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident near Houghton Road in Grasswell, Houghton Le Spring at 12:17 on Sunday 4 October. We dispatched one ambulance crew and one patient was taken to Sunderland Royal hospital for further treatment."
