French-Speaking Passenger Sparks Bomb Threat Panic on Frontier Flight to Atlanta
A disruptive passenger caused widespread alarm aboard a Frontier Airlines flight after issuing a verbal bomb threat, leading to an emergency response and investigation by federal authorities. The incident occurred on Frontier Flight 2539, which was traveling from Columbus, Ohio, to Atlanta on Sunday afternoon.
Chaotic Scene as Threat Is Made During Landing
According to the FBI, the unruly passenger, who was speaking French, made the bomb threat as the aircraft was taxiing to land at Atlanta airport. The identity of the individual has not been released by authorities. In response to the threat, the plane was immediately moved to a remote area of the airport as a precautionary measure. Police then boarded the aircraft to safely deplane all passengers and crew members.
Disturbing video footage shared on social media captured the tense atmosphere onboard. The video shows flight attendants urgently instructing the disorderly passenger to take his seat. One flight attendant is visible standing in the aisle, while the camera zooms in on the man, who was wearing a hat and glasses, as another crew member attempted to communicate with him.
Passenger Accounts Reveal Heightened Fear and Confusion
Jessica Kinder, a passenger on the flight, provided a firsthand account to WSB-TV2, describing how the situation escalated rapidly. "The flight attendants started to panic," Kinder reported. She recounted that crew members began shouting instructions, "Heads down, hands up, heads down, hands up," as the rowdy passenger started shouting profanities at them.
Kinder also observed the passenger exchanging text and voice messages with another man seated in the row behind her. "They were sending voice messages back and forth," she said, noting that the conversations were in French, which she could not understand. This added to the confusion and anxiety among those onboard.
Aftermath and Investigation Underway
Following the evacuation, another video depicted the chaotic scene on the ground, with passengers' bags and suitcases lined up along a remote road. Passengers were seen walking toward a bus that later transported them to the terminal. The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation, with Atlanta police providing support.
In an official statement, the FBI sought to reassure the public, stating, "FBI Georgia responded, along with Atlanta Police, this afternoon after a flight from Columbus to Atlanta was disrupted by an unruly passenger. All passengers and crew were taken off the aircraft. The FBI can assure the traveling public there is no continuing threat related to this incident."
The statement further explained that authorities are currently conducting interviews to gather facts and will consult with the Attorney's Office to determine whether federal charges will be filed against the passenger. Frontier Airlines confirmed the verbal bomb threat occurred as the plane was rolling to the gate in Atlanta and emphasized their cooperation with local police to ensure the safe deplaning of all individuals.
