Rescue teams have resumed searching for George Smyth, an 18-year-old British student who disappeared while hiking in Romania's Bucegi Mountains last November. The latest operation, conducted in Valea Gigănesti, has so far yielded no conclusive leads.
Renewed Search Under Challenging Conditions
The search took place under difficult conditions, with snow depths ranging from two to three metres, and some drifts exceeding three metres. Teams from Salvamont Brasov, the local mountain rescue service, scanned and excavated areas where snow had accumulated beneath rocks.
According to a statement from the rescue service: "Unfortunately, no other conclusive hints have emerged at this moment." They added that searches would continue in the coming period, depending on mountain conditions.
Background of the Disappearance
George, from Newport, Shropshire, was last seen in the Bucegi Mountains in central Romania. He is a student at the University of Bristol. At the time of his disappearance, Salvamont Brasov noted that harsh weather and snow up to three metres deep had hindered initial searches.
In December, rescuer Sebastian Marinescu stated that George's last known location was in a "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area."
Family's Painful Acceptance
By January, George's family had publicly acknowledged their belief that he had died. They said: "When the mountains that took him are ready to let go, George will be found, and we will bring him home to say goodbye."
The rescue service indicated that this year's extended winter had left snow levels far higher than anticipated, complicating operations. Despite the challenges, teams remain committed to the search.
