The NFL has issued a security alert to teams and the players' union after recent burglaries at the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The league warned that homes of professional athletes across multiple sports are being increasingly targeted by organised and skilled burglary groups.
According to a memo obtained by the Associated Press, law enforcement officials noted that these groups often strike on days when athletes have games. The burglars have been known to conduct extensive surveillance, including posing as grounds maintenance workers or joggers in the neighbourhood, and even attempting fake home deliveries.
The NFL advised players to take precautions, such as implementing home security measures and avoiding posting expensive items or daily activities on social media until after the day's events. Burglars typically enter through side doors, balconies, or second-floor windows, focusing on master bedrooms and closet areas in secluded homes.
The homes of Mahomes and Kelce were broken into within days of each other last month, just before and on the day of Kansas City's home victory over the New Orleans Saints. No injuries were reported in either incident.
