CCTV footage has captured the moment a masked thief smashed the glass door of an Asian food store in Newport, grabbed the till, and fled the scene in just 20 seconds. The incident occurred at around 2am on Friday at a convenience store on Clarence Place, near Newport city centre.
Details of the raid
In the video, a man wearing a mask and appearing to carry a hammer is seen approaching the shop slowly while looking over his shoulder. He then launches a frenzied attack on the front door, smashing the glass with the hammer before kicking his way through. As he enters, the shop's alarm begins to sound. The thief sprints through the store, rips the till from its desk, and runs back out, ducking under the damaged door and turning left down Clarence Place. The entire raid lasted 20 seconds.
Appeal for witnesses
The shop owners have appealed for witnesses on social media, urging anyone with information to come forward. A spokesperson for the store said: "If anyone was in the area at the time or has CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam footage that may assist, please contact Gwent Police or send us a private message. Any information, no matter how small, could help identify those responsible. Thank you."
A spokesperson for Gwent Police confirmed they received reports of the burglary and that the till was stolen. "Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information can call police on 101, or direct message on social media, quoting 2600201416," they said.
