An undercover police officer foiled a terrorist plot to shoot Jewish people in central London, in what authorities described as a potential mass casualty attack. The operation targeted two men, Walid Saadaoui and Amar Hussein, who were planning an assault near the Houses of Parliament.
The suspects believed they were confiding in a friend, but that individual was in fact an undercover operative working with counter-terrorism police. The officer infiltrated the group and gathered evidence of the planned attack, which involved firearms and was aimed at Jewish individuals.
Police have stated that the plot could have been one of the deadliest on UK soil had it not been interrupted. The Metropolitan Police stressed the importance of covert operations in preventing terrorism, noting that the undercover officer's role was critical in bringing the suspects to justice.
Saadaoui and Hussein were subsequently arrested and charged with terrorist offences. They are currently awaiting trial, with the prosecution relying heavily on the testimony and evidence obtained by the undercover operative.
