US President Donald Trump has expressed his 'surprise' after the suspects in a probe into a terror plot at a UK RAF base were released on bail. Five men were arrested in Whelford, Gloucestershire, in the early hours of yesterday morning (September 27) on suspicion of committing offences under the Explosives Act.
They were further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act. All five suspects have been released on bail, GloucestershireLive reports.
Trump's Reaction
President Trump has said he is “surprised” that the suspects were released on bail and that he would not have done so, the Press Association reports. The RAF base is used primarily by the United States Air Force and has been the USAF's European bomber hub for operations in Iran and the Persian Gulf for months.
Police Investigation Continues
Police activity has continued at the base on Monday (September 28) as part of an investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing. A cordon has been in place around three vehicles at the location.
As a precaution, around 85 households were advised to evacuate, and a nearby leisure centre was opened for those unable to stay with friends and family. Gloucestershire Police said that while the cordon remains in place, residents can now return to their homes.
