RAF Fairford terror suspect bailed as Westminster addresses searched
RAF Fairford terror suspect bailed after Westminster searches

A UK-Iranian national arrested following the suspected terror incident at RAF Fairford has been released on bail. The 25-year-old man was detained in Westminster on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) said they had searched two properties in the same area. Five UK nationals in their mid-20s have also been bailed following their arrest on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism.

Political Reaction to Bail Decisions

US President Donald Trump criticised the decision to release the five men. Prime Minister Andy Burnham insisted their bail conditions were the 'tightest possible'. Mr Burnham also said there were 'strong indications' Iran played a part in the incident. Iran has denied the accusation.

Incident Details and Ongoing Investigation

The incident began after a farmer reported suspicious activity near the base in Gloucestershire over the weekend of September 27. CTP swooped on three vans, arresting the five males. Police said no explosives were found in the vehicles, but a quantity of petrol was recovered.

RAF Fairford has been used in recent months by US bombers flying missions to Iran. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, CTP added.

CTP Statement on Complex Inquiry

CTP senior national coordinator Vicki Evans said: 'The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry.'

'As we've made clear, we're looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement. I'd like to thank the public for their continued support and patience whilst we work through this investigation.'
