A 31-year-old man from Bedfordshire has been arrested by counter-terrorism officers after suspected hazardous substances were discovered at a property in Caddington. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest on Tuesday on suspicion of possession of articles for terrorist purposes, and the suspect remains in custody.
The man had previously been detained by Bedfordshire Police on 6 May on suspicion of causing explosions likely to endanger life and possession of class A drugs. He was released on bail before being re-arrested in connection with the terror-related offence.
A controlled explosion was carried out at the site on Hyde Road, Caddington, last week by an ordnance disposal team, according to police. The investigation was transferred to the Met’s counter-terrorism command on Monday following ongoing searches of the residential address.
Specialist officers are continuing to examine the premises, where a number of items and substances have been found and are being removed safely. The Met stated that there is no believed risk to local residents or the wider public.
The force is working in collaboration with Bedfordshire Police and the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit as inquiries proceed.
