An explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in Moscow’s Kudrinskaya Square has killed at least three people and left 21 injured, Russian state media reported. The blast was caused by a homemade explosive device.
The National Anti-Terrorist Committee said a woman carrying explosives attempted to enter the restaurant but was stopped. The device then went off, killing the woman, a security guard and a visitor.
Investigation under way
The blast happened at around 8pm local time (5pm UK). The Moscow Investigative Committee told the RIA news agency that the attack is still being investigated, releasing a video showing heavily armed law enforcement officers at the scene. Roads nearby have been closed off to the public.
Witnesses said they saw people leaving covered in blood following the explosion. Authorities have not named those killed or injured and have yet to say who they thought might have been responsible. Police said the injured had wounds of varying seriousness.
Restaurant in Stalin-era skyscraper
The restaurant is located at the base of the Kudrinskaya Square Building, one of Moscow’s Stalinist skyscrapers built in the 1950s. Its website stated it was closed on Saturday for a private event on its outdoor terrace.
Balzi Rossi chef Carmine Alfieri said on Instagram: “We’re all fine, and our restaurant and kitchen are in perfect condition; there was just a minor issue at the restaurant entrance.” Dozens of cyclists had been gathering nearby for an evening ride.
